Default Kyle's (hoagie rollz) engine story!! PICS INSIDE!

As most of you know, Kyle's car started making loud ass noises and it died on him. After many suggestions I went one day to his place to help him find out what the issue was. We finally got the car to start, with a jump, and it sounded like a bad diesel truck.......we knew the motor threw a bearing or rod.

I offered my help, another opportunity to learn, and we towed his car to my place. The first day we worked on it we were able to remove the entire intake manifold off the car. We only worked on the car an hour or two.

The car sat out in the street while he found someone with an engine lift. This weekend he finally found a friend with a lift. So, yesterday we spent a couple of hours getting the motor ready for the lift. All we left intact was the transmission bolts and the crossmember connection.

Today was the big day! Kyle brought the lift with two friends. After reading the manual, it gave us step by step instructions on what to do before removal. We removed all transmission-to-engine bolts and the two crossmember nuts. Kyle's friend strapped down the motor. ****Lesson learned: Reading the manual it stated to remove the slave cylinder, a hex cap right below it, and to remove the clutch release bearing shaft. We removed this, after a trip to Kragen by Kyle and his friends, and disengaged the clutch release bearing. I have assisted in removing/installing two Subaru transmissions (5 and 6 speed) and we never did this. Seperation of the transmision was a bitch.

After the above was done, we lift the engine a little and with the help of the perfect tool, crow-bar, the engine was out in less then 5 minutes! I'm sure that dis-engaging the clutch realese bearing had something to do with it. Well, below are the pics, enjoy! *****sorry for the long story :)******

I said "if I'm not mistaken" witch evidently I am.. I suppose I was looking at the internals only.

There is a guy out in alpine that rebuilds subarus he does the same thing out front does, specialize in VW Subaru conversions for buggys. His name is Steve Johnson and he does great work. I have his number around here somewhere.

Yeah, I haven't been around here much since my wagon has been dead. I'll visit, from time to time, to see how people on here are doing...and maybe make a rare post. But that's about it.

The Blazer is still treating me real good and I have not done much to the RV (still needs to be smogged/registered ($150) and needs new tires($700)). But she starts, stops, turns and shifts fine. Oh, and I want to replace all the markers and stop lights with LEDs. :)

Yea if you could that would help. I was not questioning you like that Eric I know you have all sorts of knowledge on these cars and know alot around them so I wanted to make sure I was not looking in possibly the wrong area or some thing. But yea if you could get me that number it would be nice. OutFront is up there by disney land so kind of a long drive. Do you know about out front and there work then?

Well if you do it like I am and do 90% the work your self then I can say that Out Front motorsports is charging me $900 for all the short block work. If you would like I could hook you up with there number.

Well I dont know what happened to the quote thing but yea I guess that works.

Here:

Steve Johnson
S&S Sand Car Services
Performance Sand Cars and Subarus
Quality service and complete engines

Shop: 619 445 5232
Cell: 619 244 1702

He gave me a complete rebuild on a 2.5, slight bore, hone, set of his spec JE pistons, new bearings, rebuilt oil pump, resurfaced heads, headgaskets, and reinstalled everything including the timing belt and covers... He charged me 1800 for the rebuild
Good guy, I will say he does this stuff on the side kinda since he is retired and all. He turned around my block in a week though so if he has nothing else on his plate he can get you out the door fast.

They said it was to make the engine easier to move around since they don't have an engine stand, and it had to come off anyway since they are going to take off the heads.

We started taking everything off before Kyle even had the lift. So, we had time to remove alot of stuff, including the intake manifold. By the time the lift was available, the only thing left to take out was the block. Since the lift didnt' have the chains, having the bare block was the best to use with the straps.

After having every thing off the engine was very easy to lift up and out and manipulate it as needed. Plus it was a good learning experience to get it off. Like Wil said once every thing was off it took a maximum of 5 minutes to yank the motor out of there.

So Pook and I went at about 4pm last night up to outfront motorsports to get our motors. It was about a 2 hour drive up and then we got both of our EJ25's. So I came home with my short block a full gasket set and an oil pump. Pook got the short block, gasket set and timing belt. Over all it cost us $2500. So now I need to get my car from Wil's house then take it to the guy that is building Pook's car and I am gonna have him build my car also.

Those are my two thoughts. But if we get our cars built together then we are going to caravan up to church at the same time and if not then I will get tuned at HBspeed. Truth be told I have not talked to either tuners yet so....

Well today I spent alot of my day taking care of car stuff. I took my old long block with the new block and all the engine stuff to the builder. Then from there I got a window in the back of my jeep and I put new tires on my jeep and went and got it aligned. So getting closer and closer to getting that car running. Also today I ordered my clutch kit, injectors and my FMIC.

OK got new gasket set with engine
new oil pump
did not get new oil cooler
new oil lines
gates racing timing belt
tensioner was tested and was not bad
got arp head studs
pistons will clear
Head work is getting done as we speak setup should run 8.2-8.5:1
Tuning where I live: kind of hard when your shop is charging $350 over church and HB speed. I can get fully tuned by them and then if need be do like one of our other members on here and pay $150 to get retuned if any thing changes.
All this stuff was the small stuff that goes with a big build like this so thats why none of them were ever mentioned.

gates belt sucks, it leaves a blue residue on idler pulleys..coating is coming apart basically..

re-using the tensioner is risky..

make sure pistons and valves clear !

We do budget tunes now;
intake/downpipe/exhaust 1hr/$250
if headers and some more parts involved 1.5hrs/$375
Big frame turbo etc 1.5-2hrs/$375-500

never had a tune exceeding $500 on stock ECU lately..

stand alone tunes are about $500-1000

Why is reusing the tensioner risky I checked it. and its still tight so in that case buying a new one would just be paying to get what I all ready have right...?
